Founded by theatre professionals on the shores of beautiful Flathead Lake in western Montana, The Last Best Plays aims to supply the average American community theatre with shows that are production-friendly, offer a balance of womens to mens roles, and provide an affordable alternative to many of the larger publishing houses. While often addressing topical subjects and situations, plays contain no gratuitous sex, violence, bashing or harsh language. Education through performance is a primary focus; a night at the theatre should be uplifting, moving, inspiring, and, most of all, fun for the entire family!
The Last Best Plays features small cast musicals and comedies with minimal staging and accompaniment requirements, and listed under three headings: Childrens Theatre, Community Theatre and Advanced. Childrens and Community musicals feature flexible casting for as few as 20 and as many as 80 performers, all ages. Advanced shows feature small cast comedies and musicals. Strong roles for females and children are a plus.
Scoring is typically for single piano or combo, unless otherwise noted, and simple enough for most musicians. Plays are generally produced in manuscript format and feature detailed production notes. We offer consultation on specific questions by mail, phone or email. Artistic residencies, often by playwrights, may be arranged on a per-case basis.
Through our association with Black Paw Music, cast recordings for most shows may be purchased separately as CD or cassette. Inquire for availability and format.
Priority for inclusion is given to Montana and Northwest playwrights, who may also enjoy project development through production.
NOTE: No perusal material will be issued without a completed application on file. The issuance of perusal material or sale of recordings in no way expresses or implies permission to produce. All shows are subject to royalty payments and fees, as dictated by copyright laws of the United States. Violation of these terms may result in cancellation of contract, refusal of production rights and/or legal action.
